What is a Life Calendar?

A Life Calendar is a way of drawing a human life as a grid of weeks.

Instead of seeing an age as a number — 30, 50, 80 or 90 — you see the interval as thousands of small, equal boxes. Each box represents one week.

The idea is simple, but the change of scale matters. Years are useful for telling a story about a life: school years, jobs, relationships, places and decades. Days are useful for planning what happens next. Weeks sit somewhere in between. There are enough of them to show detail, but few enough that an entire lifetime can still fit on one screen. That is why the week has become the natural unit of the Life Calendar.

A horizon, not a prediction

Time to Go deliberately does not ask where you live, your sex, your health, or any other information in order to estimate how long you might live. You choose the age at the end of the calendar yourself. You might choose 80 because it feels like a useful reference point, 90 because that is the horizon used by the best-known version of the Life Calendar, or 100 simply because you want a longer view.

The number does not claim anything about your future. It asks: What does my life look like if I draw it from my birth date to this age? You can change the horizon whenever you want and see the same life at a different scale.

Why visualize a life in weeks?

Knowing your age and seeing your age are surprisingly different experiences. “Thirty years” is a familiar phrase. Around fifteen hundred individual weeks are harder to hold in your head at once.

A grid gives the interval a boundary. It lets you see the part already lived beside the part that has not happened yet.

There is no lesson built into the picture. Time to Go does not tell you to become more productive, set more goals, or treat every empty square as a deadline. The calendar is simply a different way of looking at the same dates. What you make of that view is yours.

How many weeks are in a life?

The classic Life Calendar usually treats one year as 52 weeks.

Those numbers are useful shorthand, but they are not exact calendar arithmetic. A year contains 365 days, or 366 in a leap year — not 364. Over several decades, those extra days add up.

That is why Time to Go calculates from your actual birth date to the birthday at your chosen horizon, rather than assuming every year contains exactly 52 seven-day weeks. A real 90-year interval is usually close to 4,696 weeks, rather than exactly 4,680. The familiar 52-column layout remains useful visually; the calculation underneath it uses real calendar dates.

How to read your Life Calendar

The grid begins on your date of birth and moves forward one seven-day block at a time. Lived weeks are weeks whose seven-day interval is already behind you. This week shows the seven-day block containing today. Weeks ahead lie between the current week and the birthday that marks the horizon you selected.

The grid always represents the complete interval. Changing the horizon does not change your past; it changes how much future space you choose to include around it.

Why 52 columns?

A 52-column grid keeps the connection between weeks and years visible. A row is roughly a year of life, making a long interval readable without turning thousands of weeks into one endless line.

Calendar years are slightly longer than exactly 52 weeks, so rows are a visual rhythm, not a claim that every row is precisely one age-year. The grid provides the shape; calendar arithmetic provides the count.

Where did the Life Calendar idea come from?

Visual representations of a human lifetime existed long before the web, but the modern “life in weeks” format became widely known through Tim Urban’s 2014 Wait But Why essay, Your Life in Weeks. The essay showed a long life as a simple grid of weekly boxes and demonstrated how differently a finite interval feels when it can be seen all at once.

Time to Go uses the same underlying idea — one box, one week — while calculating the visualization from your own dates and a horizon you choose. It is an interactive time visualization, not an estimate of how long you have left.

Your date stays with you

A date of birth is personal information. The Life Calendar works differently from Time to Go’s shareable date-interval tool: your birth date is processed locally in your browser. It is not placed in the page URL, and the personalized calendar is not generated on a Time to Go server.

Reloading or sharing the normal Life Calendar page does not reveal your birth date to someone else. If you choose to export or share an image of your calendar yourself, the information visible in that image is, of course, yours to decide whether to share.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Life Calendar the same as life expectancy?

No. Life expectancy is a population statistic that depends on factors such as age, country, sex, time period and methodology. The age chosen here is simply the end point of your visualization; Time to Go does not use it as a prediction.

What age should I choose?

There is no correct answer. A horizon of 80, 90 or 100 years can all produce useful views. Choose the number that makes sense for what you want to see, then change it if you want another perspective.

Why can't I choose an age I have already reached?

The selected age defines the future end of the Life Calendar. If that birthday has already passed, it cannot act as the end of the current visualization, so Time to Go disables it.

How many weeks are there in 90 years?

The traditional 52-weeks-per-year grid contains 4,680 boxes. A real 90-year calendar interval is slightly longer — usually around 4,696 seven-day weeks — because calendar years contain 365 or 366 days. Time to Go uses actual dates.

Does Time to Go store my birth date?

No server-side copy is required. The calculation happens in your browser; the birth date is not included in the URL or application analytics.

Why use weeks instead of days?

Days produce tens of thousands of boxes, while years reduce a lifetime to only a few dozen. Weeks provide enough detail to make the passage of time visible while keeping a whole life compact enough to view as one grid.
